Let’s call it straight: One Trick Pony stole the show last night, outplaying every other band on the bill. It’s an unfortunate to happen at 9pm. It throws the momentum out of whack and a stellar set that early usually doesn’t the crowd it deserves — except this time there were probably more people watching One Trick Pony than any other band, so maybe the word had gotten out that this would happen. It through me for a loop.

In the course of four days “Children Part I” and “Children Part II” have shot towards the top of my “favorite locals songs to hear live” list.

Or was it One Trick Pony? Frontman Randolph Williams III kept insisting that “One Trick Pony” could not come and that onlookers were watching “Raw Sugar,” perhaps naming the band different since they were plugged-in, drummer Jenny eschewed boxes for an actual drum kit, and they had a (gasp!) guest bassist. The added power really served to amplify the band’s talent as well as their sound.

Best compliment I have to offer: hearing One Trick Pony live forces you to fall in love with every single woman in the room.
